GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Pitt County GOP says they have filled the state House of Representatives seat left empty by Representative Brian Brown. The committee elected Dr. Greg Murphy, a Greenville urologist, to represent District 9 in the General Assembly. Now, Governor Pat McCrory must approve the move.

The GOP is not worried. They say Dr. Murphy is more than qualified for the job.

“When you look at his resume, you think why would you want to do this?,” says Pitt County GOP Chair Ginni Cooper. “It’s simply because he has a servant’s heart and he wants to give back to his community. And he certainly has a lot of things that he can give back.”

If approved by the governor, Cooper says Murphy would be the only physician serving in the House. She says this will be vital when it comes to making tough decisions on health care.

Murphy told the GOP he planned to run for the seat in the 2016 elections. If he is approved, Murphy will still have to face off against any challengers in a March primary for the position.
