Advocacy in Action!

NCMC White Coat Day

There is power in numbers and a great way to demonstrate that power is by joining your colleagues for a day of legislative engagement in Raleigh!

  • Gather at the NCMS headquarters for breakfast and a plan for the day.
  • Learn about the latest developments at the NC General Assembly and the best messaging to use when meeting with legislators.
  • Head to the Legislative Building for one-on-one meetings with representatives and attend committee meetings on important healthcare issues.
  • Wrap up the day with a Legislative Reception at the NC Museum of History. Share your experiences with other attendees and NCMS staff while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and drinks!

CME Series for Opioid Use Prescribers

The North Carolina Medical Board and Wake AHEC, in collaboration with the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation / Project VBOT and the Addiction Medicine Fellowship program at UNC School of Medicine, have developed an eight-hour CME series that meets the new training requirement recently established by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. Palliative/Hospice | Four Seasons Compassion for Life | Henderson County

1. What is a quote that has had a significant influence on your life, and why?

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." - Maya Angelou

This quote has guided me through the challenges of hospice and palliative medicine as we always want to have the perfect words to bring peace and comfort to our patients and families. Sometimes the realities are difficult, but knowing someone is there to walk by their side and compassionately hold their hand through their journey is more important.

2. Where are you from originally?

I'm originally from Tampa, FL. I relocated to Fletcher, NC 17 years ago with my then spouse and 2 children.

3. How did you decide to become a physician?

I decided initially to become a registered nurse, after working in the auto industry for 20 years, as my father began battling early on-set Alzheimer's disease at 55 years old. At the time, I believed that would allow me more time to care for him. I had never dealt with any health challenges in our family before this, so it was a completely new adventure. Unfortunately, his condition progressed faster than expected. I was then introduced to a difficult health care system and eventually hospice care. That experience sparked my passion to help others understand the dying experience, navigate the hard to ask questions, anticipate the needs of their loved ones and learn to ask for the help that is so often neglected for caregivers. While working as a hospice RN and being entirely supported by Four Seasons, who embraced me as a new grad RN, I continued my education obtaining my Family Nurse Practitioner degree. After working with hospice for 5 years, I was welcomed to the Palliative Care side of our organization, where I currently remain.

4. What do you like about practicing in an underserved area?

Working with the underserved is a gift in many ways. In palliative care, we are able to take the extra time to help patients better understand their disease processes. We are able to see patients in their homes or facilities, often appreciating the challenges in their environment that may be affecting outcomes. This extra time allows us to build rapport with patients, family members and pets of all kinds...and I do mean ALL kinds! Upon building this trust, we are able to provide extra education, offer suggestions or techniques to help patients work with their strengths, and offer additional resources. This rapport is important when embarking on advanced care planning conversations, which can be emotional.

5. How has Medicaid Transformation/Expansion affected your practice?

The expansion has taken some of the burden of uninsured patients off of our financial assistance program, but has not benefited our senior patients who are on a limited income.

6. Do you have any hobbies or activities for self-care?

I love hiking in our beautiful mountains and am currently training for my first overnight backpacking trip. Coming from Florida, I love water, so if I'm not by a mountain waterfall or river, I prefer to be on the beach! I also enjoy biking and pretending like I know how to play pickleball. For self care, I meditate often and enjoy attending sound baths.

The Community Practitioner Program is exploring avenues that could provide support to preceptors in rural and underserved areas in NC, which are facing major shortages in the healthcare workforce. Be a part of the first statewide resource and referral network that unites healthcare and human service organizations through a shared technology - a great tool for delivering person-centered care to your patients. 3. Stop & Take the Pledge for Diabetes Prevention.

The pledge demonstrates your willingness to support diabetes prevention in NC. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a lifestyle change program that has free or low-cost options for patients, regardless of their insurance provider and you can refer using any of these convenient platforms: OCHI (Our Community Health Initiative), NC CARE 360 and the DPP Navigator.
