CPP Participant Highlight

Family Medicine | Hope Health Family Practice | Robeson County

1. What is a quote that has had a significant influence on your life, and why?

A quote I often think about is “Tomorrow's not promised”. It reinforces the idea of living fully in the present, valuing each moment, and being prepared for the unexpected. These reminders encourage me to stay resilient and mindful in every phase of life.

2. Where are you from originally?

I’m originally from Robeson County, Prospect specifically, a place rich in culture and history, proudly home to the Lumbee people, my people.

3. How did you decide to become a Nurse Practitioner?

I decided to become a DNP after witnessing my grandparents struggle with illness and not receive the quality of care they deserved. Their experience deeply affected me, and I knew I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. Becoming a nurse was the first step, and as I continued on this path, I was driven to further my education and pursue a DNP to ensure that others receive the compassionate, competent care that everyone deserves.

4. What do you like about practicing in an underserved area?

I appreciate the opportunity to make a noticeable difference in the lives of the community by introducing and expanding new methods of care that truly address their specific needs. It’s rewarding to see how these efforts can positively impact an underserved area, providing the care and attention that might otherwise be lacking.

5. Is your practice using any tools to address social determinates of health for patients?

We use a variety of tools to address social determinants of health, including surveys and EMR reports. Additionally, we actively participate in several county and community groups that are on the ground, working directly within our communities. These efforts help us understand and respond to the unique challenges our patients face, ensuring they receive the care and support they need.

6. How has Medicaid Transformation/Expansion affected your practice?

Medicaid expansion has enabled more of our patients to obtain insurance and access the care they need, which is a significant positive change. However, the rollout has been challenging, leading to numerous billing issues that we are currently working through which is costly and time consuming.
