Hurricane Helene Aftermath

The NC Medical Society (NCMS) is dedicated to doing all we can to respond to the devastation in Western NC following Hurricane Helene. We are working closely with the North Carolina Office of Emergency Services to assess the condition of medical practices in the region, through two critical surveys: The NCMS Practice Impact Survey and the NCMB Practice Status Form.
To view the latest results of the Practice Impact Survey, visit here.
The Community Practitioner Program would like to acknowledge our eight current CPP practice sites in the region:
Hendersonville Pediatrics, Faith Primary Care Plus, Still Waters Family Health, Silver Creek Family Practice, Surry Rural Health Center, Midway Medical Center, Four Seasons Compassion for Life and Ashe County Detention Center.
If you or anyone you know would like to share your Hurricane Helene stories, please visit here.

NCMS Academy for Healthcare Leaders: Ready to elevate your career? Apply now!

Founded in 2003, the Kanof Institute for Physician Leadership (KIPL) is a program of the NCMS Foundation that prioritizes clinician leadership in healthcare transformation. KIPL believes clinicians and leading collaborative teams, are best positioned to achieve true patient-centered care. Since its inception, over 900 clinicians and healthcare leaders have graduated from KIPL programs, making a positive impact on the NC healthcare system. This year, KIPL launched the NCMS Academy for Healthcare Leaders, offering three distinct leadership development programs:

- NCMS Academy for Executive Healthcare Leaders (EHL): For senior-level clinicians and administrators. Sessions are held from January 2025- September 2025.
Each program includes four 90-minute virtual sessions and four 6-8 hour in-person sessions on Saturdays. All three programs are currently accepting applications for 2025. Visit our website or contact Erica Neal (eneal@ncmedsoc.org) for more information.

1. What is a quote that has had a significant influence on your life, and why?
“You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. ”
I love this quote because it never hurts to be nice, and it usually helps!
2. Where are you from originally?
I grew up in Lakeview, NC. I've moved around some, lived in Pennsylvania and Louisiana for a couple of years each before returning to NC.
3. How did you decide to become a Nurse Practitioner?
. I decided to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner after 8 years of working in various roles in an inpatient psychiatric setting. I wanted to have more decision-making authority when caring for patients.
4. What do you like about practicing in an underserved area?
. I enjoy working with clients that have limited access to care due to social determinants of health. Many of our clients are living in poverty, have limited access to transportation, have no insurance, or are underinsured. I believe that if we weren't offering care, many of these individuals would have nowhere else to go to receive it. This makes the work feel even more meaningful.
5. Is your practice using any tools to address social determinates of health for patients?
We do lots of things to address social determinants of health, but we'd love to do more. We have peer support and community support that assist clients with getting to appointments and helping them connect with other resources such as food pantries. We can pay for housing at a sober living home for clients that are utilizing intensive outpatient treatment due to substance use. We partner with community resources to link clients with jobs and also that help clients involved in intimate partner violence and women in crisis.
6. How has Medicaid Transformation/Expansion affected your practice?
Medicaid expansion benefited so many of our clients. We were already providing care to clients without health insurance, but the expansion has made it so clients have access to more medications and services. For example, we're able to serve more clients in our office based opiate treatment program. The biggest benefit for our clients is that they're now able to receive medical care. Clients are now able to go to the dentist, get their hypertension and diabetes treated, etc. I had one client that was able to get a mammogram for the first time in 10 years after expansion passed. Breast cancer was detected, and she was able to get treatment. Luckily it was detected early, and she has a good prognosis, but if Medicaid expansion hadn't passed, who knows how long it would have gone undetected.
7. Do you have any hobbies or activities for self-care?
My hobbies include reading, spending time with my family, and seeing live music with friends.
