Bridge the Gap in Mental Health Care

We would like to extend a special thank you to Jesse Wienberg, founder of the mental health care network, April Health, for sponsoring the CPP luncheon. If your practice is overburdened and doesn't have the time or resources to treat behavioral health issues, please share information with your practice managers about this innovative collaborative care model that strives to bridge the mental health care gap in rural and underserved areas.
April Health partners with rural primary care providers (PCPs) to offer the staffing and billing support necessary to seamlessly integrate these services into their practices. This collaboration not only improves patient outcomes but also creates a new revenue stream for rural practices. April Health can work with practices of any size and has already achieved success with practices in Rutherford and Haywood Counties. If you are interested in partnering with April Health or would like to learn more about the CoCM model, please submit an inquiry on their website or email jesse@aprilhealth.com.
NC Summit on Reducing Overdose

The North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) is excited to announce an event to bring together local government leaders, subject matter experts, service providers, community partners and people with lived experience working in crucial areas of the opioid overdose crisis, including in prevention, early intervention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery efforts. This event will provide a space for local government leaders and staff and their community partners to participate in and learn from experts and each other over a two and a half-day conference in Wake County.

CPP Participant Highlight

Ben Powell, PA Behavioral Health | Southlight Healthcare | Wake County
1. What is a quote that has had a significant influence on your life, and why?
“You treat a disease: You win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you win—no matter the outcome. ” - Hunter Doherty "Patch" Adams
I really love this quote because to me it highlights the benefits of the person-centered approach to medicine. I try to embody this modality since it allows me to make relationships with the people that I treat in an effort to focus on the whole person instead of just the disease process.
2. Where are you from originally?
Charlotte, NC.
3. How did you decide to become a Physician Assistant?
I really enjoyed the idea of being able to change specialties without having to redo a residency... Turns out I've been in the same field for 8 years now though but I really love the work that I do :)
4. What do you like about practicing in an underserved area?
I feel that my efforts and the resources that I have to offer have a greater impact on my population and help make greater amounts of change than I could make with a more affluent population.
5. Is your practice using any tools to address social determinates of health for patients?
We screen for SDOH at admission and then link our patients with different programs, both internally and externally, that can help to close these gaps. I honestly work for an amazingly comprehensive mental health company that truly focuses on giving back to the patients to help them try and overcome these barriers. It's the ability to see people be able to rise from a state of despair into a flourishing recovery that truly keeps me going in my line of work.
6. How has Medicaid Transformation/Expansion affected your practice?
It has allowed the company to make access to additional/less profitable service lines possible at our facility.
7. Do you have any hobbies or activities for self-care?
I enjoy rock climbing and yoga.
8. Is there anything that CPP can do to help you and your practice?
I appreciate all the resources and support that you all offer to help make my position and what I have to offer possible.
