NCMS Legislative Affairs Director Hannah Rice presents the latest state advocacy updates.

The 2026 NCAAIS Annual Meeting was held in Durham, North Carolina, and brought together approximately 55 physicians and advanced practice providers for a weekend of education, collaboration, and networking focused on current issues in allergy, asthma, and immunology. The event offered attendees valuable clinical updates, advocacy insights, trainee scholarship, and meaningful opportunities for professional networking and collaboration within the allergy and immunology community.

The scientific program on Saturday, May 16, featured a broad range of timely topics, including the impact of climate change on allergic disease presented by David B. Peden, MD, MS; an advocacy update from Hannah Rice with the NC Medical Society; and a session on chronic urticaria by David A. Khan, MD. Additional presentations included hereditary angioedema (HAE) by Marc A. Riedl, MD, and genetic testing applications for allergists by Nicholas L. Hartog, MD. The day concluded with the NCAAIS Business Meeting and an evening welcome reception that provided additional networking opportunities with exhibitors and colleagues.

On Sunday, May 17, attendees reconvened for additional educational sessions beginning with hereditary alpha-tryptasemia presented by Matthew P. Gianetti, MD. David R. Stukus, MD, delivered an engaging presentation on social media and combating medical disinformation. The program also highlighted fellow research presentations from trainees representing UNC, Wake Forest University, and Duke University, showcasing emerging work in food allergy treatment perceptions and the overlap of atopic disease with immune dysregulatory syndromes. The meeting concluded with a keynote session on food allergies presented by Edwin H. Kim, MD, MS, followed by wrap-up remarks and a prize drawing.
Legislative Activity
The NCAAIS has advocated for physicians on the following:
- Payment of 95165 with UHC/Optum
- Buy and bill for biologics/BCBSNC
- Participated in payer discussions on medicolegal issues, pricing differences between hospitals and clinics
- Participating on NCMS Payer Tactics Task Force to address prior authorization, telehealth, payments issues with BCBS 80/20 Health Plans
