The NCMS has a number of membership categories that pertain to the physician's or PA's level of training and licensing status. If you are unsure of your membership category, contact NCMS Member Services at 1-800-722-1350 (NC only) or (919) 833-3836 or email member_services@ncmedsoc.org.

Active Physician:
Active members of the NCMS are physicians who are out of medical school and residency/fellowship training and currently practicing medicine. You must hold an active NC license in good standing. All active members are entitled to all privileges of the NCMS, including the right to vote and hold office. Dues: $475
 
Administrative Medicine Members:
Administrative members are physicians who work in the state of North Carolina for a healthcare-related facility or organization, but do not maintain a North Carolina medical license. These members pay dues and assessments at the same rate as active members, and are entitled to all privileges of the NCMS, except for the right to vote and hold office. Dues: $475
 
Affiliate (Military) Members:
Affiliate members are physicians serving in the military, based in North Carolina, and do not hold a current NC medical license. These members pay dues at 66% of the active member dues, and, except for the right to vote and hold office, are entitled to all benefits of the NCMS. Dues: $314
 
Disability Exempt Members:
Disability exempt members are current members of the NCMS whose disability is certified annually by their county society or by an attending physician and who are fully retired from the profession of medicine. They are exempt from all dues and have all the rights and privileges of active members except for the right to hold office. Dues: $0
 
Life Members:
Life members are current NCMS members who (a.) have retired from the profession of medicine and reached the age of 60 by January 1 of the current year and have been physician members of the NCMS for at least 20 years or (b.) if they have reached the age of 70 by January 1 of the current year and have been physician members for 20 years providing that they have been members of the NCMS for the preceding five (5) years required by the Board of Directors action and shall be entitled to all the benefits enjoyed by active members, including the right to vote and hold office, except life members who are fully retired from the profession of medicine are not eligible to hold specific offices, as provided in the Bylaws. Dues: $0
 
Newly Practicing Physician Members:
Newly practicing physicians in their first, second and third years of practice are offered membership at the following reductions:
  • First year out of training pays 25% of active member dues ($119)
  • Second year out of training pays 50% of active member dues ($238)
  • Third year out of training pays 75% of active member dues ($356)
They have the same rights and privileges of active members including the right to vote and hold office.
 
Physician Assistant (PA) Members:
PAs interested in joining the NCMS must have a current NC license to practice and be in good standing with the Medical Board. They pay dues equivalent to 35% of the active members and may serve as voting members of committeess, and, except for the right to hold office, are entitled to all privileges of the NCMS. Dues: $166
 
Physician Assistant Student Members:
Physician assistant student members are those who are enrolled in a Physician Assistant degree program in the State of North Carolina. They can serve as voting members of committees, and, except for the right to hold office, are entitled to all privileges of the NCMS. Dues: $10
 
Resident/Fellow Members:
Resident/fellow members are physicians in a training program in North Carolina who hold an unrestricted or training license to practice in the state, or physicians who are in training in hospitals that are accredited for residency training by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and located in the United States outside of North Carolina.They have the same rights and privileges of active members except the right to hold NCMS office. Dues: $20
 
Retired Members:
Retired members are physicians under the age of 60 who have been active members of the NCMS for at least twenty (20) years and who are fully retired from the profession of medicine. These physicians are exempt from the requirement of a valid NC medical license. Until they become eligible for Life membership, retired physicians pay 50% of active member dues. They have all the rights and privileges of membership including the right to vote and hold office, except members who are fully retired from the profession of medicine and are not eligible to hold specific offices as outlined in the NCMS Bylaws. Dues: $238
 
Semi-Retired Members:
Semi-retired members are current physician members of the NCMS who have been dues paying members for at least twenty (20) years, who are at least 60 years of age, and who continue to be active in the profession of medicine but are working less than 20 hours per week. They pay 66% of active member dues until they become eligible for Life membership. They have the same rights and privileges of membership including the right to vote and to hold specific offices. Dues: $314
 
Student Members:
Student members may be any student who is regularly enrolled in a college of medicine in the State of North Carolina accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. They enjoy all the rights and privileges of active members, except for the right to hold office. They may serve on the Nominating and Leadership Development Committee if elected.
